The EU has issued a warning to Elon Musk to comply with sweeping new laws on fake news and Russian propaganda, after X – formerly known as Twitter – was found to have the highest ratio of disinformation posts of all large social media platforms.

The report analysed the ratio of disinformation for a new report laying bare for the first time the scale of fake news on social media across the EU, with millions of fake accounts removed by TikTok and LinkedIn.


This is a problem for the pig faced narcissist. Even more of a problem for Russia and the hard right in the west.

The numbers are staggering.

These platorms have a duty to weed out the bad actors. They pollute public discourse.

If we conducted the same assessment of ANY media outlet in the world, would we find absolute truths and open debate? At least socia media allows for open debate by others. THAT is how the free market of ideas works.

You can't have free speech unless everyone has free speech and you can't have a democracy without free speech, so the cost of censoring out "disinformation" from social media is far too high to allow politicians and bureaucrats to decide what speech is allowed and what speech is not allowed.

He is between a rock and a hard place on this actually. If he requires token membership fees, he will kill the site globally. He would actually be better off geo-blocking the EU. Even then "disinformation" is problematic. If there is one thing COVID era politics should have taught you is that a lot of information was buried which shouldn't have been and a lot of representations were made about the vaccines by officials that turned out to be misleading

I don't defend that, I defend the principle of free speech, without which there can be no legitimate democracy. Politicians and propagandists have always lied, and if democracies cannot withstand this lying, then democracy is not a sustainable system.

There's a pretty reliable, clear way to tell.

Any side that is calling for opposing views to be censored should be assumed, always, to be the side that is willfully putting out disinformation.
