I hope I can put it clearly:

Eskimo is the cover-all term for several groups of polar people.
One of these groups are the Inuit.

So: Every Inuit is also an Eskimo, by definition.
But not every Eskimo is an Inuit.

Just as the Bavarians are Germans, but not all Germans are Bavarians.
Just as the Welsh are British, but not all British are Welsh.
i ssy it again ….

I’ve probably said the word Eskimo more often. Especially when I was a kid.

It’s one of those words, like Negro, that is now problematic but was once considered a completely normal and neutral word

When I was a kid, Eskimo was simply the word one used when talking about those native people who lived in the arctic in igloos and hunted seals and stuff

No one was being racist

Whale is kinda fatty, but tasty.

Why I say Eskimo:

1) it is an all-inclusive term - Inuit isn't
2) it is not offensive, as some claimed.
3) it does not mean: eaters of raw meat, but makers of straw shoes
4) the argument, that worldwide only that term should be used that in the respective country is used, is nonsense. See the case of the term "Germany".
Leg me repeat this

Yes, there is nothing racist about it

Technically ... Inuit-speaking peoples are distinct from First Nations ... some in this language group tried to move south, but could not compete against the bigger stronger better settled First Nations ... yeah, Indians killed Indians ...

There should be another option in the poll ... calling Inuits "Inuit" and calling Eskimoes "Eskimo" ... those are separate nations no matter how close their languages are ... or are we buying into the latest ****** stereotype ... fine, just don't get upset if an Apache calls you a Latino ... ha ha ha ha ha ...
I dont think there is an Eskimo nation
And Eskimo is the cover all term for polar peoples.

I usually refer to them as First Nation or aboriginal unless I am being cheeky. Then I might call them Eskimo, usually with igloo in the same sentence.
I tend to refer to them as Indigenous People, but then again, I tend to refer to myself as Native American because neither I nor a great number of my ancestors over the past few centuries have been native of anywhere else.

However, there are a lot of people that disagree with me there. It's not like I am ever going to try and figure out if that makes a difference though, because ethnic segregation is not much use to me. I am willing to give anyone a shot at getting somewhere else, and I will try to understand and enjoy their culture, unless they make that so undesirable or impossible it just won't work out.

Are we being politically correct here or something? ... bedwetters use the term Yupik Nation for the people of Alaska ... Eskimo is another term used that some believe is pejorative ... like calling a Lakota Indian a Sioux ... most don't care but a few pee their bed over the Sioux name ...

The point is ... whether we call them Eskimos of Yupik ... they are not Inuit, anymore than they are Aleuts ... I understand the White Trash in Ottawa labels them all as "Inuit", that's because White Folks think all Injuns look alike ... they're better dead than living as pagans ... genocide is easier without this minutia ...

Maybe this is too fine of detail ... but then maybe you don't want your ancestry generalized either ... I'd hate to be known only for sticking my Dutch fingers in a dyke ...

Eskimo is not pejorative

That's for the Eskimos ... and the Eskimos themselves to decide ... our only choice is whether we continue using that term IF they ask us not to ... I don't care if you call me a potato ... but that's just me, other Dutch-folk might disagree ...

Remember also ... Eskimos don't mind being called Inuit, there's government money involved ... but they'll always be glad to talk about which Nation they're from ... try it sometime ...

I have fairly close Cherokee blood but I've never gotten worked up much over it. It isn't as if I identify with it in any meaningful way. Some of my relatives have gotten their cherokee nation ID card but I really don't see that is worth the effort. I'm me with all the bells and whistles of me-ness. That's it.

On the great series "The Terror," the closed captions spelled it "Eskimaux," but the Brit characters called the "Netsulek" or some such.
