Ecuadorean officials said on Monday prison riots that left 79 inmates dead last week were linked to organized transnational crime, and said the situation in its penitentiary system remained “tense.”

Last Tuesday’s riots, which left an additional 19 people wounded, were among the bloodiest incidents in the history of the Andean country’s penitentiary system and underscored the problems of overcrowding and underfunding that plagued the system.

Those riots were all kinds of jacked up but I'm pretty damn sure it's the underfunding and overcrowding that did it.

A shambles.
They had similar riots last year and learnt nothing. Still putting opposing gangs in the same prison.
Still unable to stop the flow of arms into the prisons because of ridiculous "human rights" laws.
All prison visits for gang members need to be behind protective glass with no physical interaction.
Staff need to be searched rigourously before each shift.
Large gangs should be treated as national security threat and held in military camps.
Bring back the death penalty for repeat killers.

Lots of prisons in C. and S. America the inmates run them, and overcrowding is an understatement. 79 dead, dam that was a war.

81 dead.
That was last week.
Then just last night the prisoners in the same prison seized 5 guards.
Socialist Government there like forever.
Ecuador needs a Bolsonaro., and let the cops start killing these scum.
As it is,, if a cop kills anyone, he/she goes automatically to jail until after the Court case.

Transnational gangs- sounds like deflection to me- trying to absolve someone of a responsibility-
Exactly. At some point these good folk do have to accept responsibility for something or anything.
