EBT Story: Very common in Hawaii.

If it is so common, how come you could not find a single link reported in any news organization substantiating this fraud? It could be true. Who knows? Who is dumb enough to depend on unsupported stories from some unidentified message board duffus, called shipwreckedcrew?
Yeah, I'm sure those getting food stamps would never dream of swapping their benefits for drugs and alcohol. Perish the thought.

And I am sure similar stories happen all across the other 49 states, plus territories.

EBT Story: Very common in Hawaii.
EBT recipients go into grocery stores on first day of the month and buy Spam by the case. Some stores limit the number of cases any one person can buy.
They take the Spam to "Mom & Pop" vendors, some street vendors and some with rundown storefront operations in poor neighborhoods.
The vendors buy the Spam at a 50% discount because they use it in so many preparations.
The sellers the use the cash for drugs and alcohol.
Between the 3rd or 4th day of the month, and about mid-month, it is hard to find Spam on the shelf of stores in poor neighborhoods.

Oh yeah, that's a ghetto staple. Shoplifted goods are trafficked in the same way.

It's so common it's what is called common knowledge.

Honestly, you never heard tell of SNAP recipients reselling before?

Jeez....You much be another one who does not get out much.

There was a time, within the memory of most people here, when we had vagrancy laws.

People in a community with no means of support were giving a choice, leave the community, or face jail.

The idea that a community is responsible for maintaining those who do not contribute or do harm to society is ultimately self-destructive.

If they are clever enough to do this, they could also probably hold a job down.

The law of unintended consequences:
  1. Lawmakers are bound to assure the welfare payments they give out only be spent on what THEY think people should buy!
  2. People on program find workaround so to create trade which barters them drug and booze money in the end anyway.
  3. So, restriction of booze and drugs backfires, probably doing more harm than good. The state probably sells more drugs and booze this way in the end than if it just let people buy what they wanted directly.
Thank you. That was My whole point.

Yes. That form of benefit scam is fairly common in my state and it is Theft by Deception and it is a Class A Misdemeanor or a Class 2 felony, depending on the amount of the theft.

.

I vividly remember the people offering to go into the store with me and buy my groceries on their card, and asking me for half the amount in cash. Insane. And this was in a nicer neighborhood in Seattle.

There was a "Poor House" in my county where they were sent. It was a decent sized farm and if they did not work the farm they did not eat.

Though the poor houses are long gone I bet most of the older counties in the original 13 states still have a "poor house road" on their maps.

I have often speculated that any sort of libertarian society would have to have strict rules for participation.

Abide by the ethics of the community or be shunned.

Like an Amish community.

That is one of Ayn Rand’s biggest failures as a philosopher. She writes tens of thousands of words describing how a libertarian society begins. But, like a Disney fairy tale, she ends with “Happily Ever After”

Creating a libertarian society is easy compared to the impossible task of maintaining one.

Unbelievable. I think 90% of the Spam eaten in the US is consumed in Hawaii. My Japanese American family ate so much spam, I wanted to choke.

Teriyaki Spam on rice was there at every family holiday dinner.

Very apt symbolism for the way the bottom of the bowl operates in Hawaii.

Spam is good!

This is a recycling of an old racist urban myth.

I’ve heard variations on this story for decades.
Could be some truth, as I saw as a 17 year old, food stamp fraud, buying massive groceries, then sold in the ghetto areas of Paducah, Ky, while working for Liberty Supermarket at Cardinal point, literally back in the days of the "welfare Cadillac". I loaded many, and got big tips for completely filling back seats, floor boards and huge trunks with buggies full of hams, turkeys, etc, very popular to that trade, at the time. So, the story would not surprise me, but it is amazing there are no actual documented news stories to support, other than some message board duffus with a message board name.

Tons of Spam eaten in South Korea too.

Honestly, there has never been a verifiable news article written on this Hawaii Spam EBT fraud? No pictures of grocery carts pile high coming out the door of Foodland (the largest chain in the state), no interviews with store managers, no eyewitness news team story from KHON2, FOX News, Honolulu? Nothing, but some random X post guy, without any backup, whatsoever?

I've seen junkies coming to my business selling meat, steaks, roasts, that they got with EBT, they use the money for drugs.
