Early Voting Begins Today for Virginia Redistricting Referendum

The ballot question seems deceptive. It states an opinion that extraordinary gerrymandering is "fair." It's downright corrupt...

"Question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia's standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?"

Source:

The Texas redistricting was downright corrupt. Republicans started this.

Virginia voters just elected the "Moderate" Spanberger. Virginia is rapidly becoming the stupidest State in the Union. Right up there with Minnesota and California.

I think we all know what the voters of Virginia will do with this issue. It is a foregone conclusion.

The stupidest states in the union are red states. Republicans started this and complain when Democrats fight back. In California and Virginia, voters get a say unlike states like Texas where Republicans run roughshod over voters. I am glad that "Moderate" Spanberger is standing up to radical fascist Republicans.

I voted today. I want to know what the hell is up with the wording of this referendum:

Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?

  • Yes
  • No
Restoring fairness? Nothing subjective about that, is there? I thought these things were supposed to be free of bias. How is eliminating every GOP district but one anything near "fair"?

Might I suggest the correct wording?

Should the Constituition of Virginia be amended to alow the General Assembly to eliminate almost every Republican district?

Totally agree. (post #2). The referendum question includes a biased opinion.

Who is to blame? The usual....

"The amendment was introduced and approved by the House of Delegates and the Senate in October 2025, and then re-approved by the 164th General Assembly in 2026. The Virginia Supreme Court cleared the path for the referendum to proceed as scheduled on April 21, 2026, despite legal challenges."

I don't think what Texas is doing should affect what Virginia does. Also, if gerrymandering is wrong, you don't fix it by doing more of it. It's like fixing discrimination by implementing DEI.

Imagine if Virginia passed a law where the threshold for felony theft was raised to $10,000, and Texas then lowered its threshold to $5 to "right the wrong." That's probably not the best analogy, but it conveys the idea.

Jim

I do. If the other side brings a knife to the fight, you bring a knife. What Texas does affect Virginia and every other state in the union. Republicans are using every dirty trick in the book to hold onto power. When the other side agrees to stand down then you stand down. I support DEI.

Imagine if you knew what you were talking about. Your analogy is stupid.

Early voting is set to begin Friday across Virginia for an April 21 statewide referendum that could allow the General Assembly to redraw the state’s congressional districts ahead of this fall’s midterm elections. If voters approve, the move would likely reshape the current 6–5 partisan split in Virginia’s delegation into a map favoring Democrats in as many as 10 of the state’s 11 districts.

Any Virginia voters here should get out and vote against it.....Please bring friends.....I plan to.
Are you against the redistricting in Texas?

Of course you're not. Because you are a hypocrite.

Aren't you pleased Trump started this redistricting war?

Trump and the MAGA herd never think things through.

It's referring to restoring fairness nationwide, not just in Virginia.

If Republicans are going to cheat in Texas, then Democrats have to counter that in other states. If you don't like it, then tell Texas Republicans to quit gerrymandering.

Texas was in response to California and Illinois which were more gerrymandered than Texas is now.

That's a blatant lie. Texas did it first. Get your facts straight.California and Illinois had long-established, heavily gerrymandered maps that favored Democrats prior to the 2025–2026 mid-decade redistricting push initiated by Texas Republicans.

You may apologize now. Let's see if you have the decency to do so.

And so did Texas, you idiot. Texas started their new redistricting last year in the middle of a decade, which no states ever did before. California and Virginia are responding to what Texas did. --

  • Gerrymandering in California became prominent in the 1950s
  • 1961: Democrats took control of the legislature and reversed the gerrymandering to secure their own power.
    • 1981–1982: Congressman Phil Burton drew heavily Democratic maps, famously calling his 385-sided district a "contribution to modern art".
    • 2001: Known as a "bipartisan gerrymander" or "sweetheart gerrymander," both parties agreed to map changes that protected all sitting incumbents, leading to almost no competitive seats.
    • 2008/2010: Voters passed Propositions 11 and 20, creating the Citizens Redistricting Commission and removing the power from the legislature. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Prior to 2011, the California Legislature held the power to establish district maps every ten years, which was consistently used for political advantage.

You're sorry. Going to apologize now?

3. If you can't be nice or intelligent, you get put on iggy.

So far you're failing both tests, hon.

You are unbelievably stupid and dishonest.

Everyone knows that Texas started the current redistricting fight last year. CA, IL, and VA are responding to what Texas did.

I just put up a link showing the opposite, idiot.

No, you did not. Your stupid link talks about crap that happened 20+ years ago.

That has nothing to do with Texas' mid-decade redistricting last year. They started this.

We’re talking about who did partisan gerrymandering first. CA did it in the 50s. Texas in the 2000s. CA and IL were both far more gerrymandered for years than Texas is now. You lost. Apologize.

Nope, because Republican states have been far more gerrymandered for the past 20 years than Democratic states. Wisconsin and North Carolina have actually been the worst in recent years, after years of Republican corruption and cheating in those states.

And Texas was the first state to start mid-decade gerrymandering last year, in order to please Trump and try to keep control of the House. States have always waited until the beginning of decades, after the 10 year census is completed.
