Then along comes an adoration-starved huckster who knew just what to do: Communicate to them and them alone, exclusively and in their language. He tested the waters with the birth certificate thing, saw it worked, and went from there.

They were desperately seeking a voice, and along it came, even though it was a guy who is just using them. That was the spark, they ignored all the blatant evidence about what he clearly is, and they happily sold their soul. This is the result.
