If Nixon did not resign, there was a possibility that the move to impeach would have failed because republicans still supported him.

Support for impeachment gain traction and more support but would it have been enough to impeach.

Nixon had his defenders for over a year the support eventually started to drop.

Interesting point in the story is that a republican in congress about 2 weeks before Nixon resigned was the first republican to publicly turn on him and said he would vote for impeachment.
