I doubt Trump would spend a billion of his own money on his campaign but his wealthy pals would probably help out considerably. Win or lose, the presidential candidate as fund raiser is essential for congressional races. By running as an individual rather than as the head of the GOP ticket, Trump would almost certainly cost the party both houses of Congress as well as countless state governments. This would be the decisive end of the Reublican civil war and the beginning of reconstruction.
