Are you capable of admitting you are WRONG?
Because you are WRONG.
Don't fluff the situation, just admit you are WRONG.
Tax on SS for Seniors was NOT eliminated, as you claimed.
Did Social Security benefits become tax-free?
No. The underlying rules that can make up to 85% of Social Security benefits taxable remain in place. The law did
notrepeal those provisions.
What changed is that the new deduction reduces taxable income. For many middle-income seniors, that reduction is large enough that they may owe little or no federal income tax, including tax associated with Social Security benefits. But that is an indirect effect, not a repeal of Social Security taxation.
Short answer
- Was there a proposal/promise for "no tax on Social Security"? Yes.
- Did Congress actually eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits? No.
- What happened instead? A temporary $6,000 senior deduction was enacted, which can reduce or sometimes eliminate federal income tax for many seniors, but the Social Security taxation rules themselves remain unchanged.
