Quote from SOTU:

... I’ve always known what endures, our north star: The very idea of America, that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. We’ve never fully lived up to that idea, but we’ve never walked away from it either. And I won’t walk away from it now.”

This seems to be an accurate description of the modern liberal's "north star". But it's a radical departure from equal rights, and the reason we've never "lived up to it" is because it was never the goal. In the US we strive for equality under the law. That means the government must treat everyone equally. It's not a requirement that we all treat each other "equally throughout our lives".

Our government claims to treat all the same, but it never has.
