Do we really need to spend Billions to go back to the Moon?

An investment with no return.

We can't return to space in any serious way until we develop technology to do so economically.

The return might take a generation or two. That's why we can't entirely rely on private interests for this. Just because it's not profitable right now doesn't mean it's not worth doing.

----plain and simple--we are in HUGE debt----if you can't understand THAT, you do not need to be on this forum

I'm shocked that you were able to make an account and successfully log in.
....Medieval communities failed because of high taxes.......and you people are talking about going to the moon with the pandemic going on and it's financial effects????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????
...that money would be more effective/SMARTER/etc to be put into infrastructure/schools/etc------we are going to have big problems with Federal and local $$$$$ baskets!!!!!!!!!!!!....the pandemic has hurt the US financially

China is interested in space, especially in a military capacity. Who do you think will be running the show in a world where China dominates space?

All these comments made about wasting resources on space exploration are brought to you by technology possible because of space exploration.
...at much much more cost than if they didn't go into space---they could've advanced technology at a much lower cost

What will change in a generation or two that would make it profitable?

There is no reason for us (and I mean humans, not our machines) to go into space until we have the appropriate technology to take us there safely and economically.

Do we need to spend billions of much needed dollars to go back to a dead rock in space called the Moon?. Its been done before. Is it really something we as a nation have to do again.? your thoughts. The money could be better spent here on Earth..
But Trump created the Space Farce to protect those on the Moonz...

All of those vast expanses of free gas, man..We can't let it go to waste without making a profit for a couple of people who already have incalculable wealth.

Actually, Space Command was created in 1982 to protect one of our most important national assets, orbital and geosynchronous satellites.

As cool as it would be, Space Force as an autonomous command, will never have star fighters and star cruisers doing battle in the solar system. We're just going to have to watch that in the movies.

So, like regular duty it is boring in space when doing duty..

Class hatred aside, when you're trying to make money from commodities, you have to be able to sell them to everyone (even the exploited proletariat).

There's no point in harvesting all that "free gas" if doing so cost much more than you could recoup by selling to the masses.

Pretty much, yea. Military service is military service in Iraq, Mars, or Biloxi Mississippi.

Well if you're good with spending money on space AI then we have some area we can agree on. I think that kind of thing should be a bigger focus anyway.

It's not just rich people that benefit. All of humanity will benefit from space-related technology.

What's the value of the knowledge we stand to gain by exploring and understanding our universe more?

The moon can be a launching base at some time in the future allowing space flight into distant solar systems and galaxies....
If China beats us to it....it will be used not for exploration but world domination.....

Unfortunately, we are so conditioned by our culture to believe that human space heroes flying around in spandex is a desirable (and obtainable) goal, the idea of Wall-E doing our work in space doesn't generated a lot of public enthusiasm and, ultimately, funding.

No bucks, No Buck Rogers.

In the next few centuries computers will make most human labor obsolete anyway. The real benefit from that technology would be the ability to reach and colonize other planets.

Exploration by automation, sure. It's economical (comparatively) and useful ... if exceedingly mundane to the public.

But, the idea of intrepid space colonists and Elon Musk's private space pleasure dome on Mars aren't going to happen.

Probably true but the ability to colonize another planet might be useful someday.
