and a shotgun with just one (bead) sight isn't capable of reliably hitting head on prone men beyond about 30 yds, or cover using (bobbing in and out) heads beyond about 20 yds. shotgun trigger pulls suck, and buck and slugs are VERY expensive, so nobody practices with them NEARLY enough to be truly skilled with them. Recoil and blast of such loads is so bad that .22 or airsoft practice is of almost no value towards mastery, either.
A properly suppressed, shorty 223 autorifle is JUST as tame to use as is the .22lr conversion unit without the "can" in place. So you can do a lot of cheap, indoor practicing with it. Airsoft practice helps, too. especially for learning to use the "weak side" shoulder.
