3. The round struck Kirk in the throat, damaged the trachea, penetrated the thyroid, sternocleidomastoid, destroyed the carotid and damaged the jugular finally lodging in the outer spinal cord after going through other sundry nerve and muscle tissue.
4. Undoubtedly, some of the impact was dissipated by hydrodynamic shock and movement of the upper torso and neck upon hitting the spine, but as to the caliber, was it really a 30-06? That is the question.

No, but a preliminary report was leaked days ago along with an xray of Kirk's neck showing the final resting place of the bullet at the C4. It was not intended for public consumption. Frankly, I had not intended to (at least publicly) bringing the matter up nor discussing it for obvious reasons.

Well, I will wait until they officially announce the recovered bullet fits the forensics of the rifle pattern and gauge of the rifle found, but the x-ray released by pathology shows a slug found in near the spine.

So I have to assume that it was a 30-06 that arrived there by some peculiar combination of factors: hydrostatic dissipation, rebound of the body, and maybe it deflected from the spinal bone and changed direction hitting other things 1-2 times before coming to rest near his C4, or they are mistaken about the gauge, or, the rifle was gauged differently than they thought, or, the bullet killing Kirk did not come from the rifle found and believed.

For the day he was shot, I said right away, the bullet did not exit the back of him, as obviously, there was a big white tarp stretched behind him, and it would have been covered red with blood and tissue had the bullet exited his back.

That would make more sense. I would think that a direct hit in the spine with a .30-06 would have practically decapitated him.

It's plausible. Anyone who has killed a lot of deer over their lifetime has seen the weird results of spine shots.

I pulled this one out of a big buck I shot in the lower neck, it ended up just under the skin way up on the neck. It's recovery was so unusual is the reason I saved it.

.308 150 gr Federal Light Magnum....It's also a reason I went away from that round. Note the jacket had completely separated from the lead.....I found bits of the jacket in the wound channel.

I went to Federal Premium with the 150gr Nosler Partition bullet after that because I had been noticing jacket separation. Through and through wounds but I'd find the jacket somewhere.

I've not heard one way or the other.

I know they have the rifle/casing (the rifle was recovered with the spent casing still in the chamber) but did the bullet head to parts unknown or was it recovered? Today's hunting bullets hold up pretty well, even with a spine hit.

Not that it really matters, just curious......Given all of the other evidence that has been collected thus far, that would just be adding gravy; the meal has already been prepared.
