First a clarification, soliders in wars kill. Mr. Couch murdered 4 people. According to the Bible, he should have been executed.

Second, dunno how this court swears people in, but if they use a Bible this is worth pointing out:

Not to appoint as a judge, a person who is not well versed in the laws of the Torah, even if he is expert in other branches of knowledge (Deuteronomy 1:17)

I have seen enough coverage to say however that justice was denied. Maybe the judge had valid reasons, but I can't begin to imagine what they were if the kid's responsibility was obvious and not even disputed.
