Democrats have lost their traditional advantage as the party of the middle class, according to new CNN polling that left the network's own data analyst expressing disbelief at the scope of the shift toward Republicans on economic issues.
The polling represents a fundamental realignment in American politics, erasing decades of Democratic dominance on middle-class representation just as the party prepares for crucial 2026 midterm elections.
CNN polling released Monday shows the parties now tied when voters are asked which represents the middle class12. The result marks a stunning reversal from 1989, when Democrats held a 23-point advantage on the question, or even 2016, when they led by 17 points12. By 2022, that lead had shrunk to just four points12.
"They have traditionally been the party of the middle class. No more!" CNN's Harry Enten said during Monday's broadcast1. "Donald Trump and the Republican Party have taken that mantle away."
Republicans also maintain an eight-point lead when voters are asked which party is "closest to your economic views," virtually unchanged from an 11-point advantage in November 202312. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Republicans expanding their economic advantage to 12 points, up from nine points in May 202423.
Comment:
I thought that the middle class voters were already voting Republican.
The Republicans are much closer to the center than the Democrats.
The Democrats are a coalition of the fringe who loath mainstream society.
