It is not that $250K is rich, but rather that they stop paying social security tax once their earnings hit a specific legal limit, known as the contribution and benefit base or "taxable maximum".

• A person earning $250,000 will pay the 6.2% Social Security payroll tax on their first $184,500 of income (amounting to $11,439).
• The "exemption" point: Any earnings above that $184,500 cap escape the Social Security tax entirely.
• The outcome: Someone making $250,000 OR MORE pays the exact same amount into the system as someone making $184,500, meaning they pay a lower effective payroll tax rate on their overall income.

Under the Social Security Expansion Act proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders, the rule that high earners stop paying into Social Security at an income cap would be eliminated. His plan requires people who make over $250,000 to pay Social Security taxes on all of their income above that threshold

Now, ONLY the party for the rich would argue against this.

To them, a Republican engineer making 200k in a rural area of a red state is the same as a Democrat garbage collector in NYC making the same with a much higher cost of living, thus a much lower standard of living. This phenomenon boosts the average Democrat's income, but doesn't speak to their level of success relative to many Republicans.
