Southern Democrats were slave holders. They profited on slave labor which, at the time was acceptable due to the fact that the slaves were purchased from other blacks in Africa. Republicans like Lincoln, freed the slaves. Today the Democrats still hold slaves in the Democrat welfare system. The spawn of this system are the anarchists we see on the streets today burning buildings, killing innocent people and beating old folks.
