A pure democracy IS authoritarianism because it ensures that the needs and wants of the minority can be ignored in perpetuity. Think the old metaphor of two wolves and a sheep discussing what to have for dinner.

I just started a thread pointing out how unscrupulous or careless or incompetent people can steal an election. One major party wants to tighten registration and voting laws enough to make it much more difficult (and unprofitable) to cheat. One party vigorously resists that.

People in both parties have challenged election results and/or refused to accept a loss. Who can forget the 'hanging chads' and tiny indentations in Florida when Gore refused to concede. Abrams has never conceded her loss in Georgia. Hillary still blames anybody and everybody but herself and the Democrats for her loss in 2016.

But if the Republicans question the results of an election it is somehow unAmerican and/or totalitarian or worse.

The Founders in their wisdom established the electoral college to weaken the tyranny of large concentrations of population having ability to rule all the other Americans. And they made us a Republic in which elected representatives would ensure all Americans have a voice.

Democratic in that all Americans do have a voice. But not a democracy that would give all the power to the strong however evil and no ability to the minority to have any say.
