My sequel thread to bears. I'm just curious, how do you know whether or not a fawn is just waiting for its mama or hurt or sick and not to call somebody for help? Other than that I agree and that it's best to leave it alone.

If they trouble walking and look too skinny where you can see the ribs, or trouble breathing. Or healthy but wont leave, meaning momma maybe close but dead.

Moose and Bears do the same thing so never come anywhere near a waiting cub... because mom is coming back....

That's what I mean. How long do you wait before you realize that Mama is probably not coming back before calling somebody?

a full day should do it. If you do see her just hide and let her call it to her. She knows when it needs fed but she wont come up there if spooked

I knew that so if they bleat and Mama doesn't return then you call somebody?

If mom ain't back in two to three hours call fish and game...
They don't leave them long and they don't leave past where they can pick up their babies scent...

I actually was reading that fawns don't have a scent to protect them from predators unless a human touches them.

well in my case 3 dogs from my hood had it down nosing it CIK

so i kicked all the dogs away from it , didn't see any blood, waited for a while to see if it could move on it's own, then decided i should try and pick it up to see if it could stand

as soon as i did mama appeared out of the brush, grunted, and the fawn ran to her

she sniffed her baby , then turned to me with a notable 'thank you' grunt.......and off the went

Are you sure that wasn't a "keep away from my kid" grunt?

True but the mom can still smell their babies... how? who knows... but I've seen deer find their babies at animal shelters and they will wait outside until they are released...
