1) About 12:30am on 12/31/1862 the USS Monitor sank near Cape Hatteras. 16 sailors went down with her and 47 were rescued. If you get a chance, visit The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia. Most of the artifacts recovered from The Monitor after she was found in 1973 were sent there for restoration and are on display there.
2) The Battle of Stones River in Murfreesboro,TN began on this day in 1862. It was a 3 day battle and ultimately a Union victory. Some of the battlefield was preserved by the National Park Service and is part of Stones River NMP. Stones River National Cemetery is there also.
