Reagan didn't get into the 1976 nominating contest until late, challenging an un-elected president who had pardoned the disgraced president who preceded him. Ford was able to prevail because Reagan's brand of conservatism was still considered kind of scary in 1976 in large parts of the Republican party.

We forget that now when Republicans mutter the name of Reagan like he's one of the saints. at the time, a lot of republicans weren't keen on him.

Now, for Hillary, yeah, she will probably be able to bully her way to the nomination this time because she has no real challengers. Warren isn't running, Webb is a joke, Biden is too... well, Biden.
