We are talking about a meaningless game. A football game is only a game. Competition breeds hostility if overdone. Thats unacceptable.

We're talking about attitude and what breeds hostility. You can apply that to anything: education, business, hobbies, friendship, marriage, anything. Some people learn from experiences and are better people regardless of the outcome, and some don't. Sports has helped a lot more people than it has hurt, and if you think that participation trophies build character maybe you just have to look in the mirror for an example.
