Zone1 Dancing round the Maypole

It started in Serbia as a means to keep the people moving and hinder the Roma pick pockets from scoring .
Later it developed into Football when they got sick of the pole getting in the way .
It became a goal and then later plural .
But the Roma PPs loved the change until this very time .

Which happens to be 21.38 BST .

Do you know this custom?

Have you ever seen it?

Or done it yourself?
.

I have seen it, but never done it.

At a church meeting today of some of the elder ladies, one woman brought us all "Maybaskets" she had made and filled with chocolates, and we had a good reminisce about how we all, as children, looked forward to May Day, for making Maybaskets of construction paper and lace, filling them with treats or flowers, then we'd hang them on a neighbor's door knob and knock and run away.

Sweet memories from an innocent time.

.

No, OP, I never did. It was more for girls. But it was pretty much a nationwide celebration at one time. Then it got killed off. The girls didn't like it any longer. That was what I read anyway. A handful of girl's schools still do it. But it is more or less dead now.

Here I found this...

From what I gather the girls would alternate up and down over each other and make a pattern with the ribbon around the pole.

They had the May Queen and her Court. It was a big deal. It ushered in Spring.

Yep, all them girls are gone. Now we got this!

If I was younger, I could go for that purple hair one. The other two are getting a little big for me. Goddamn! You get them big girls rocking and rolling and you got one big pile of female Jello undulating all over the place. Ooooh...ahhh!
