I agree even he is surprised, but to say his rise is solely because of Hillary's shortcomings is completely stupid. The strength of his campaign from the beginning has been unprecedented:
1) He's raised more in campaign donations than any republican candidate and he did it without the help of a super PAC. Had Hillary or any other republican gone this true grassroots route, their campaigns would be severely underfunded (obviously Trump's self funding is the exception to this). He also holds the record of the most individual campaign contributions than any US candidate in history.
2) Since the beginning he has beaten every republican in hypothetical match up polls.
3) He has the highest favorability rating than any candidate in the race.
Suck on that.
Is Sander's "favorability rating" high because what he's proposing is so great...or is it high because Hillary is scared to attack him on it...and Trump loves having him running against Clinton and so he won't slam him for his pie in the sky promises either?
Sanders is only staying in a race he's already lost, to try and pressure Hillary Clinton into offering him a VP spot. She's not stupid. If she were to pick him as a VP, she would lose the election, and she knows that. Republicans would use his left wing radical policies, and his praising of Fidel Castro to defeat her. IOW--It wouldn't be about her policies it would be about his.

THE REASON FOR THE 714 DEMOCRAT SUPER DELEGATES IS 1984. They were instituted in an effort to avoid the next election disaster. This country is center, it always has been, it always will be. It's also founded on a hard work, pay your own way ethic. It's in our genetics. It will not elect far left or far right candidates, much less a recognized & confirmed
socialist that is out there campaigning on free college tuition, adding an additional 29 trillion dollars to government spending when we're already 19 trillion in RED ink.
The taxpayers of this country may be politically ignorant, but when it comes to their wallets, they won't elect a candidate that campaigns on new massive government spending. And they're not stupid enough to believe they won't get the bill.
So if Bernie Sanders were the nominee of this party, this is what election night would look like. Just move the blue part over to Vermont.
Reagan v Mondale 1984
So instead of threatening Super Delegates, you should be Thanking them. And when Hillary Clinton slaughters Donald Trump--I imagine that the Republican Party will be looking to add some Super Delegates of their own. There's just too many candidates that can exploit the political ignorance of people in this country, (like what Trump and Sanders have been doing to gather support.) They can be very dangerous.
In fact, in these open primary states there has been a lot of Operation Bernie voting going on by Republicans looking for the weakest candidate to steam roll and bury on election night.
Realistically anyone that is still supporting Bernie Sanders at this time, is only working for the Donald Trump campaign. Sanders told his supporters after winning Oregon they had a steep hill to climb.
It's Mount Everest without oxygen.
As to your question, will Bernie Sanders ego keep Democrats from winning back the Senate (only if he was picked for VP).
Hillary Clinton is going into this race with a 6 to 10 point advantage as the 1st woman Presidential nominee in this nations history. Women rule today as the largest voting block and they will be voting heavily for her. Half of Republican women will not cast a vote for Trump, and there a millions of Republican men that will be voting for her to keep Trump out of the oval office.
Poll: Nearly half of Republican women wouldn't vote for Trump

Trump and his supporters have chased off the largest minority population, Hispanics or 17% of the population is now solidly in Hillary Clinton's column. This when the GOP nominee needed 46% of this block to win the White House, Trump is polling at an Historic Negative 80%.
GOP Win Will Need More Than 40 Percent Of Latino 2016 Vote, Says Study
Poll: 8 in 10 Hispanics don’t like Trump
Latino conservatives: If Donald Trump is the nominee, we will not work to elect him
73 percent of women voters have an 'unfavorable' view of Donald Trump
These numbers are already indicating that Hillary Clinton is going to paint this country
BLUE from sea to shining sea. Republicans will lose the senate, a ton of seats in the house, and down ballot races all across this country.
Republicans only hope was for a Bernie Sanders nominee.
