The new executive order insists that recruiting diverse applicants is "diminishing the importance of individual merit, aptitude, hard work, and determination." It was signed by a man who has nominated Pete Hegseth, an understudy Fox News host, to run the Department of Defense. Hegseth's only prior administrative experience comes from running two small-time charities into the ground, resulting in his removal from leadership. This ode to the value of skills and knowledge comes from the same half-literate president who also nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run Health and Human Services, even though Kennedy claims cognitive decline from a brain worm and also refuses to accept the overwhelming scientific evidence showing that vaccines are safe and effective. The only reason the alleged testament to "merit" is even readable is because someone other than Trump wrote it. The "merit"-loving president famously can't get through a 240-character social media post without multiple grammatical errors and misspellings.

All three of these men embody the concept of incompetence, but they are white, straight and male. When Trump or any MAGA devotee is talking about "merit" or "excellence," that is what they mean: whiteness, straightness and maleness.

And the more incompetent or ignorant the straight white man is, the more he is held out as the exemplar of "merit" in MAGA-speak. For all the talk about opposition to discrimination and belief in a "colorblind" society, the actions of MAGA show that their true goal is reserving better jobs and opportunities for straight white men, while relegating women, LGBTQ folks and people of color to underpaid and lower-status employment.

Um, I was a 5 year letterman(lettered in varsity while still in middle school) and was recruited by colleges. I am also a college graduate who is much more successful than you.

I would recognize there are other factors involved. For blacks, it's 400 years of institutionalized racism. For Asians, we are kind of getting the cream of the crop. They are more likely to be affluent in their home country, etc. If they can afford to come here, it's because they have the resources and skills to.

Nepotism aside, no reasonable business person would bring on an employee simply because they are white.

Again, NFL and NBA are poor examples, because only 0.4% who try ever get there. We sell these kids that sports are their ticket out, and usually, it isn't.

The days of adding "points" to an applicant's candidate-evaluation score, attributable to race or protected class, are over.

They fabricated resumes for multiple phantom job seekers with common black and white names. The professors then sent out nearly 5,000 resumes for 1,300 job openings advertised in newspapers and on online job sites throughout Chicago and Boston.

The results are a bit disturbing, the researchers admit. Applicants with white-sounding names were 50 percent more likely to be contacted for job interviews than those with typical black names. There were no significant differences between the rates at which men and women were contacted.

This looks like a job for Resume Man!

The problem with this study is that the resumes were fake. Now, some companies will call without doing background checks, but a lot of them won't.

While I am sure that there is name discrimination, again, have to go back to Asians, who often have far goofier names than "Jamal" or "LaKeisha". Yet amazingly, Pradip Patel and Yaoling Lui still get callbacks on their resumes.

White men are just over 30 percent of the population but hold more than 80 percent of the management jobs at every level. A groundbreaking new study by economists Kline, Rose, and Walters reveals what many have known for decades—name bias is still a pervasive issue in the hiring process. The researchers sent out a series of identical resumes to analyze whether race and gender impacted callback rates of job applications at 97 U.S. employers. The study analyzed distinctly “Black” names and “white” names as well as male and female names, among other demographic differences. The results revealed that white and female names received the most callbacks followed by white male names. Black male names and Black female names were called back the least, respectively.

They aren't interviewing people for jobs if the name sounds black. But you say companies are not just hiring people because they are white.
