It appears that he beat up the bear's gnarly claws and/or teeth with his bare face.

That should teach that bear a lesson.

Yep. Learn how to wrestle. Most fights end up on the ground, and wrestlers know what to do there, lol. I didn't wrestle (wish I would have). Did some judo though, which helps in a fight.

Last time I was in that state, I met some backpack campers with the right idea. Two of them had .44 magnum revolvers on their sides. Told me they had seen a grizzly that morning. I was not strapped, and don't own one if I had been. I decided that trail didn't look near as interesting, turned and headed for the trail head parking lot.
