There were several small northern states back then that wouldnot support a popular vote election cuz the more populous states would dominate elections and render them relatively irrelevant. And the slave states wanted more representation in the federal gov't too, basically for the same reason. So the EC was not rooted in racism, but in politics.

The EC was rooted first and foremost in protecting the institution of slavery. That was the main political force. Without it, no EC.
