Police in Scotland issue warning over 'killer clown' craze
Sun, 09 Oct 2016 - Police in Scotland warn that action will be taken against people who take part in the so-called "killer clown" craze.
The prank involves people dressing up as clowns to deliberately scare or intimidate members of the public. Police Scotland said it had received a "few sporadic reports of individuals dressed as clowns" in some areas in Scotland. The reports did not specifically involve threats or violence. But police said anyone "seeking to cause distress and potential harm to anyone" should be aware that action would be taken.

The craze appears to have been inspired by clown-related pranks in the US and has seen a string of copycat incidents across the UK recently. Last week a hoaxer admitted a "sighting" in Glasgow was faked. A Facebook page called "Killer Clowns in and around Glasgow" said a clown had been spotted underneath a bridge. The post was shared more than 1,000 times before the poster admitted the picture had been taken elsewhere.

In a statement, Supt David Duncan, from Police Scotland, said: "We have had a few sporadic reports of individuals dressed as clowns in some areas in Scotland. "It is assessed that there is a current trend of similar incidents on social media, many of which have been confirmed as hoaxes and emanate from overseas. "The reports which have been made to local police officers are being investigated and do not specifically involve threats or violence. "However, any person seeking to cause distress and potential harm to anyone should be aware that police will take action. "If anyone has any concerns they should report the matter to police."

Police issue warning as creepy clown craze comes to Britain
Tuesday 11th October, 2016: British police have issued warnings after a spate of creepy clown sightings across the country, mimicking a prank that began in the United States and has spread across the world.
Police forces said they had received dozens of reports of "killer clown" sightings in the last week where individuals dressed in clown outfits sometimes carrying knives have acted suspiciously or chased people, often young children. "We believe this to be part of a much larger prank which is currently sweeping across the USA and parts of the UK," said Sergeant Mel Sutherland from Durham Police in northern England. The clown sightings started around Greenville, South Carolina, in August, when police received reports of clowns standing silently by roadsides, near laundries and trying to lure children into the woods with bags of cash and green laser lights.

It is unclear what started the craze, although some have suggested it may be part of a horror movie publicity stunt or an elaborate hoax, and there have been similar reports sightings in Australia and New Zealand. The incidents in Britain have been harmless but nonetheless frightening, police said. In Durham, four children aged 11 or 12, were followed to school on Friday by a man in a clown outfit who was armed with a knife.

"It is very alarming he was carrying a knife however we do not think he intended to harm the children and as far as we are aware, this is part of the prank," Sutherland said. Thames Valley Police, which covers an area from the west of London to central England, said on Sunday it had been called to 14 spooky clown incidents in the previous 24 hours.

In Clacton-on-Sea to the east of London, police said two girls were approached by two clowns asking if they wanted to go to a birthday party and that there had been a number of similar sightings in the area mostly near schools. The recent craze led best-selling U.S. horror author Stephen King, whose 1986 novel "It" tells the story of a supernatural being that appears as a clown, to appeal for anti-clown sentiment to be tempered. "Hey, guys, time to cool the clown hysteria - most of 'em are good, cheer up the kiddies, make people laugh," King wrote on his Twitter website last week.

Creepy clown craze: McDonald's mascot to limit appearance
Wed, 12 Oct 2016 - McDonald's has said its iconic mascot will keep a low profile following creepy clown sightings around the world.
Scary clowns were first reported in the US in August and have quickly spread to the UK, Australia and now Brazil. The craze, in which people dress up in masks and scare members of the public, has received widespread attention with the help of social media. McDonald's did not say how many of its clown's appearances would be cut.

Ronald McDonald has not commented on the move. "McDonald's and franchisees in local markets are mindful of the current climate around clown sightings in communities and as such are being thoughtful with respect to Ronald McDonald's participation in community events for the time being," a statement said.

Ronald McDonald, a pasty-faced, scarlet-wigged clown with an expression of permanent surprise, has been a global icon for the franchise for decades. In August, locals in Greenville, South Carolina reported people dressed in fright wigs and full clown make-up trying to lure children into the woods. Australian police also arrested a 19-year-old for scaring residents.

A student dressed as a chainsaw-wielding clown was filmed chasing other students on a UK university campus. He has apologised saying he was "only chasing his friends". Police have increased patrols outside some schools, and asked fancy dress shops to remove clown masks from sale.

Austria 'horror clown' attacks leave several injured
Wednesday 26th October, 2016: The so-called creepy clown trend has spread to Austria where several people have been injured in attacks by masked assailants in the lead-up to Halloween.
Three men disguised as "horror clowns" assaulted a 19-year-old man with a baseball bat at the weekend in the western state of Tirol, local police said on Tuesday (Oct 25). The suspects fled the scene. In another incident, a 16-year-old jogger was seriously injured on Sunday when she fell down a steep hill after being scared by a creepy clown who had jumped in her path in the Carinthian city of Villach.

The teenager was hospitalised while the suspect manage to escape, police said. Another 16-year-old girl twisted her ankle on Monday evening when she ran away from a man wearing a clown mask in a parking lot and fell down some stairs in central Styria state. Authorities said they were still searching for leads regarding the suspect.

People have been reporting numerous other sightings across Austria on special Facebook pages dedicated to creepy clown spotting. Police have issued several warnings in recent days against wearing a clown mask. "If you scare someone, you could be already committing an offence," Carinthian police spokesman Michael Masaniger said last week.

The good thing is that if the cops ever round up all of these clowns...at least they'll be able to fit them in one tiny police car.
