This survey was performed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (the top engineering school in China). Ranking criteria included: alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories; articles published in Nature and Science; articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index; academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.

Of the Top 100 schools, the Chinese rank 51 as American. Of the Top 20 schools, 17 are American (see links below).
