The problem with a laser weapon is that, unlike in science fiction, at any distance you need to hold it on target for a certain amount of time. It's hard to get the enemy to stand still long enough for the laser to do damage. The way around this is increase the power to the laser, but few soldiers can lug around a 500 pound battery.
