Standard practice, been required at two of my companies that I’ve worked at and I expected it from my employees to be given to me weekly. Not too detailed, just to make sure they’re staying focused on the priority issues for them. My version included multiple items on their projects, one of them was to list any roadblocks that they needed help with from me to get through. When I worked for a Fortune 400 company we also had to do that every week, it was called "Weekly Highlights".
