Capitalism and extreme poverty

  • •The common notion that extreme poverty is the “natural” condition of humanity and only declined with the rise of capitalism rests on income data that do not adequately capture access to essential goods.

  • Data on real wages suggests that, historically, extreme poverty was uncommon and arose primarily during periods of severe social and economic dislocation, particularly under colonialism.

  • The rise of capitalism from the long 16th century onward is associated with a decline in wages to below subsistence, a deterioration in human stature, and an upturn in premature mortality.

  • In parts of South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, wages and/or height have still not recovered.

  • Where progress has occurred, significant improvements in human welfare began only around the 20th century. These gains coincide with the rise of anti-colonial and socialist political movements.

What do you mean?! Is it, then, that the communists are RIGHT? Lenin and the USSR - planetary Good?

Hey, move to Venezuela. I hear they are going super dooper great in their socialist utopia.

Well.....those that can actually find food that is.

The capitalists have the means of production, the proletariat has the power to take them away and direct them in the interests of society as a whole. All according to the law of the market - survival of the fittest.)

How's that working out in Venezuela, or North Korea? I hear that the proletariat are starving there?

You should go there and find out.

Go spend a few years in a communist country then come back and tell us about poverty, death, and the degradation of the human spirit.

I lived in the USSR for 35 years, and if it were up to me, I would give my life to bring back the USSR and socialism. The whole world would also be a better place in this case, including US.

You are completely full of shit.

The worst state for poverty is California -

One state that strives to be Socialist is California. Can you explain why California is doing so badly with such a fantastic Social system?

At the end of the day capital is labor. All that is needed for success is more labor, "Six days shall you labor..." not five. Ask any entrepeneur if he or she can be successful working only 5 days, or 40 hours per week, and they will laugh in your face.

Funny how extreme poverty only exists where liberty and capitalism are suppressed.

It's hard to understand you morons, whether Trump, Biden, or Britney Spears are communists...
That's the republicans goal. Flip words like authoritarian, socialist, communist,

Like they said democrats were being authoritarian with the lockdowns, mask mandates and insisting people get vaccinated if they want to work.

But we also know Trump was an authoritarian ruler. He certainly wanted to be. Only the Senate/House kept him in check.

How do you know Trump was authoritarian?

Post ONE link to anything he did that was authoritarian.

1) Socialism implies collective ownership of the means of production. What does California have to do with that ?
2) As far as I know Missouri is the poorest state in the US... by far.

Cali is taxing the middle class out of existence to give to the illegals swarming over the border.

On the night of April 3, the trashy disinformation site Gateway Pundit posted a “bombshell” about Judge Merchan’s daughter, who apparently worked at a company whose clients included the Biden-Harris campaign. The next day, the right-wing site Breitbart picked up the story and quoted from a tweet from Trump’s son Eric. Later, Donald Trump Jr. shared a link to the Breitbart piece—which prominently displayed what appears to be a picture of the judge with his daughter—on Twitter and Truth Social, calling her “yet another connection in this hand picked democrat [sic] show trial.” Junior left the implication hanging there, but when Trump Sr. returned to Florida last night, he connected that final dot, asserting that the judge’s daughter is now personally on Joe Biden’s campaign payroll.

There is no subtlety here. Trump and the people who fashioned this non-story into a “bombshell” knew exactly what they were doing. Making such accusations while spreading the daughter’s picture around the right-wing media swamps is dangerous. But Trump, his failsons, and the family’s various enablers were all sending a message to the judge: You have a lovely daughter, Your Honor, and we know who she is and where she is.

This is a classic move from the authoritarian playbook: If you are threatened by the law, threaten those who administer the law.
