cannabis use in old people associated with larger brains, better cognitive function

This is just a bunch of baloney. Cannabis use among seniors does not improve brain function.

ok, forget any improvement. how'z about staying at home, watching youtubes, & forgetting about how fucked we are as a country & maybe get the giggles & munchies for a while?

will that work for ya, 'cause it sure does for me & it sure helps w/ my BP.

It damages the brain even with casual use, it can trigger psychosis, and anxiety even paranoia. Get good single malt scotch

the gov'ment held a patent on cannabinoids for decades precisely because they knew of its benefits.

Abstract

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH 3 , and COCH 3 .

This is more propaganda to legalize and promote marijuana use. Its negative effects far outweigh any claimed benefits, particularly if smoked for a long period.
Absolutely true. And it's hilarious to see the potheads deny reality. Too stoned to make good judgments anymore.

I love how defensive potheads get when their precious weed gets exposed for being dangerous to some people.

  • Using neuromelanin-sensitive MRI, the study revealed a dose-dependent rise in dopamine signals in those with more severe CUD symptoms.
  • These brain changes mirror those seen in untreated psychosis and were not found in non-cannabis-using schizophrenia patients.
  • Findings support a biological link between cannabis use and psychosis risk, with potential implications for early intervention and public health messaging.
Conclusions and Relevance Elevated dopamine function in a critical SN/VTA subregion may be associated with psychosis risk in people with CUD. Cannabis was associated with the hypothesized final common pathway for the clinical expression of psychotic symptoms.

It might not be a great idea for schizophrenic people to smoke pot. I don't know, just sayin.

CB1 receptors form heterodimers with mu opiate receptors. They're expressed in many of the same brain areas, like insular cortex and anterior cingulate cortex. That's where the euphoric effects supposedly come from. Pot potentiates opiates and vice versa.

There is another brain area called claustrum, that receives rich dopamine innervation and is associated with hallucinations. It sits between the cortex and basal ganglia, like two sheets of paper. There are no cannabinoid receptors here, but this area talks to the insular cortex and has a whole-brain map, so downstream effects are conceivable, even likely.

There are quite a few people who live on the edge of psychosis. Most of the time it's transient, but not everyone knows themselves well enough to identify it or admit it. I know several such people who say pot helps keep them stable. Who knows, the brain is a complicated place. Pot makes most people lethargic but there's about 15% of us who get stimulated by it. I'm kinda the classic raid the fridge and fall asleep type. :p

Seems cannabis helps relieve the downside of being a senior. :p

When I get to retire (which'll be three years from now when the kids graduate), I can start smoking again. :lmao:

Do you realize how many seniors have joint pain? Cannabis unquestionably works on joint pain, it's not a miracle cure but it brings the pain down to a level of tolerableness and mostly out of consciousness.
There are better ways to relieve joint pain. Lose 30 lbs or more for one. Don't eat inflammatory foods.
Pot causes cancer and other problems.

The Rastafarians say that the ganga intensifies the spirit you bring to it ... if you want drunkenness, then you will get drunk ... if you what laughter, then you will laugh ...

So ... yeah ... bring psychosis, you will get more psychotic ...

Yet ... if you bring the Spirit of Christ ... then you will get the Spirit of Christ ... eye-n-eye ...

Because of the way the thread titles are truncated due to letter limit, the title of this thread (at least on by browser) says "cannabis in old people ass"

I thought to myself, "now THIS promises to be an interesting thread!"

Maybe Boomers are just now realizing how big-headed they have been their entire lives.

Pot causes cancer and other problems.

you don't have to smoke it. when i was 1st diagnosed w/ high BP, i quit smoking ( after 26 years ), lost - yes - 30 lbs, AND gots me a treadmill, just to try not being on prescript meds.

didn't work, but even though i smoke it ... my at home BP monitor always registers lower about 1 hr or 2 after partaking, then when i haven't.

fact.

Even the New York Times editorial board has come out saying legalization was rushed without enough study.
