About 20 years ago, an effort to find remains started at the Kamloops school, which operated from 1890 until the late 1970s, and was once Canada’s largest, with 500 students at its peak. Members of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation made last month’s grim discovery after bringing in ground-penetrating radar.

Among the 215 bodies found by the radar, there appears to be one of a child who died as young as 3, said Chief Rosanne Casimir of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc. All of the children were buried decades ago, she said.

Casimir also said she anticipated that more remains would be discovered as the ground is scanned further this month. The community is now working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the coroner’s service in British Columbia.

On Friday, Casimir said the bodies found so far appeared to be buried in separate “unmarked burial sites that are, to our knowledge, also undocumented.”

Interesting. I remember the story at the time, and assumed at least a sampling would be unearthed just for verification, though maybe not all as it supposedly being hallowed ground. Very surprising further investigation beyong ground penetrating radar did not take place. Thanks for posting it.

In fact there are graves and bodies.
The important question to follow up on if you have any interest is on the question of the graves being marked at some time and the crosses or wooden markers have rotted away.

And that's not to suggest that is the only issue that has been raised on residential FN schools, the government's involvment, and the catholic churches involvement.

You're a complete and total idiot. THE CHILDREN ARE STILL ALIVE. These schools only closed within the past 50 years. The Truth and Reconcilliation Commission heard the testimony of hundreds of survivors of the Residential Schools. Women and men who had been beaten, starved, and abused in every way possible and who helped dig the graves of the children who died. Parents whose children were taken away and never seen again.

If you know an adult Native Canadian who grew up on a reservation, you know a residential school survivor. The agencies who ran the schools have admitted to the deaths. The schools were grossly underfunded, and the children were poorly cared for, poorly fed, and died at twice the rate of white children in the general population.

You cannot learn from the mistakes of the past, if you cannot acknowledge them. Right wing Americans keep repeating the same things over and over because they cover up what their ancestors did.

The Canadian Residential Schools were modelled on a similar program run in the USA. They're just starting to search the grounds of the American schools now. Native leaders expect similar results as happened in Canada. I have both family and friends who have parents and grandparents who are abuse survivors.
