The decision comes following a parliamentary motion introduced by the New Democratic Party, which voiced dissatisfaction at what they see as Justin Trudeau’s insufficient efforts to safeguard civilians in Gaza.
Lawmakers voted 204 - 117 in favour of the non-binding motion, following a lengthy debate which originally called for a weapons sales suspension but was changed to an outright ban.
The Canadian Parliament also passed a non-binding resolution calling for the international community to work toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
Canada had earlier placed a temporary suspension on export permits for military goods and technology, and has only exported “non-lethal” shipments such as communications equipment to Israel since its war on blockaded Gaza.
But the governmental department, Global Affairs Canada, continued to receive applications for arms exports to Israel and they were reviewed on a case-to-case basis.
Defense Minister Bill Blair informed local news that there are existing contracts with Israel in place, but the ban would be imposed moving forward. He stated, “There has been a lot of concern expressed with respect to... lethal military sales to Israel during the conflict.”
Israel is among the top 10 recipients of Canadian arms exports, with over $15 million worth of military equipment exported to Israel in 2022 according to Radio Canada, following $19 million in shipments in 2021.

In March, a coalition of lawyers and Canadians of Palestinian origin lodged a complaint against the Canadian government seeking to suspend arms exports to Israel, saying Ottawa was violating both domestic and international law.

Canada should keep those arms to defend themselves from their imported jihadists.
