The trade deficit between the U.S. and Canada in 2024 was $45 billion dollars. Yes, the tariff is rational. However, it really isn't the reason necessarily for the threat. As you saw today, there is a 30 day hold on the tariff because Canada has agreed to stop fentanyl from coming across their boarder to the U.S. as is Mexico. President Donald Trump confirmed the deal later in a post on Truth Social.

"I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured," Trump wrote.
