Can you imagine being married and being told it is illegal to use birth control?

Birth control was not used to emancipate women it was used as a means to exploit them. The last thing the perps want is women continually pregnant so they cannot work and would require money for themselves and their offspring. No it was about having you cake and eating it. Let a women have a few children then exploit her to the hilt, looking after her charges, her spouse and working as well.

Women have been fooled like no others, what is seen as freedom and choice is nothing more than the wholesale exploitation of women. Everything from birth control to what a woman should look like is totally controlled by men.

Aside from that, consider the exploitation of women inherent in "Now I can not only get women to fuck me without a commitment, I can actually get them to feel OBLIGATED to fuck me without a commitment." Birth control (and legalized abortion, of course) did much, MUCH more to liberate the sleazy men we used to refer to as "cads" than it ever did to liberate women.

A true cad couldn't give a fuck, so to speak.

The only downside I can see to women having won the right to use birth control is that soon after I think it put the idea in some men's minds that women now have no reason to not want sex as much as they do. So some women felt pressured to act as horny and as slutty as some men act in order to be considered liberated. On the other hand, having a strong sex drive became less of a thing to be ashamed of for women also.

When my mother was newly married, she had to buy birth control under the counter. It was available to those who knew a sympathetic pharmacist.

I think it gives everyone the opportunity to trend towards their natural libido which I think (and can in no way prove) is more of a function of nature rather than nurture.

And it's somehow a good thing to encourage people to indulge whatever random urges and impulses their animal instincts desire, rather than encouraging them to control and direct those urges, which separates humans from lower animals and allows us to be civilized?

Who said they did? I believe that was the entire point.

It's the mark of a properly socialised human being to be able to contain their various appetites within whatever social restrictions happen to be in place in their location. I'm afraid over the years I've seen too many examples of poorly socialised humans who have no idea that they're not permitted to indulge each and every appetite they have.

However I do support the right of every human being to have wild monkey sex from time to time.

There are cads, true cads and the rest of us who gravitate between "somewhat sleazy" to "pure as the driven snow". Cads and true cads occupy a category. Those of us who find ourselves in the "somewhat sleazy" to "pure as the driven snow" bracket are on a continuum and we slide up and down it a lot.

Again, depends on when and how and why. If it is with your spouse, for example, then I am in total agreement.

I suppose, but on the other hand, I think the liberation of the true cads has been as detrimental to the mindset of otherwise decent guys as it has been to women by encouraging both to think that irresponsible, profligate casual sex is not only a good idea, but positively mandatory.

And with someone other than one's spouse (assuming they have one) you're in total disapproval. And you're entitled to that disapproval. But do non-married people so consorting attract your disapproval?

I'm glad it's not mandatory, I'd hate to think of the penalties that might apply for those who don't indulge!

Casual sex - whether it be low key or ramped up a bit to irresponsible and even profligate (sorry, I'm having a bit of a problem, my sweaty fingers are slipping off the keys here ) - is a private matter.

But just on that, it doesn't have to be a lifestyle choice, it might happen occasionally rather than regularly but even if it does happen regularly I don't see it as a problem society needs to address.

I do think that an individual who is on the irresponsible/profligate end of the scale may want to think about that, in the end, it's a fleeting pleasure and probably a major contributor to post-coital depression. Frankly - and this is just a personal view - casual sex is a bit like masturbation using someone else's body. On reflection I'd say it's worse, if someone is masturbating then at least they're being honest with the person they're having sex with.

Maybe we should have sex education for adults as well as adolescents, but we could call it "relationships education". I don't mean that we should instil guilt in any individual that goes after a bit of casual, profligate sex; but perhaps we might show them that there are other approaches which still mean you can get your rocks off but with as little collateral damage as possible.

margararet sanger's primary focus was the extermination of undesirables. she was quite open about it.

That's a lie. Her concern was birth control and maternal health. Every town in America had an abortionist on the wrong side of the tracks.

Too many young mothers died of repeated pregnancies and miscarriages.

You say that when she said this?

“Birth control itself, often denounced as a violation of natural law, is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit, of preventing the birth of defectives or of those who will become defectives… If we are to make racial progress, this development of womanhood must precede motherhood in every individual woman.” — “Woman and the New Race,” 1920

“As an advocate of birth control, I wish to take advantage of the present opportunity to point out that the unbalance between the birth rate of the “unfit” and the “fit,” admittedly the greatest present menace to civilization, can never be rectified by the inauguration of a cradle competition between these two classes. In this matter, the example of the inferior classes, the fertility of the feeble-minded, the mentally defective, the poverty-stricken classes, should not be held up for emulation to the mentally and physically fit though less fertile parents of the educated and well-to-do classes. On the contrary, the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the overfertility of the mentally and physically defective”.- from Eugenics Value of Birth Control Propaganda 1921

Now, when she said that, who was educated and well-to-do and who was poverty-sticken, and what "racial progress" was she talking about?

Repeated pregnancies and miscarriages impact maternal health and the health of babies. Can't you understand what she was saying? It affects poor women the worst.

“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members. [Explaining rationale for using prominent black leaders to advocate birth control and abortion]”
