It is not a very productive discussion, as with most of these five minute question periods.
The Democrat Congressperson is more civil than most of them, which is nice to see. But she still controls the time and feels At the entitled to ask question and then cut off the answers.
Point of the discussion is that the Democrat is concerned with cuts to SNAP in the "Big Ugly Bill" as she calls it. The second witness who is a Trump Admin pediatritian agrees that it is important that kids get nutritious foods for health and school performance.
The first witness - A Democrat I believe - talks about the prevalence of childhood obesity and childhood pre-diabetes. Both of those are caused literally by eating too much food, especially the kind of high calorie, low nutrition foods commonly purchased with SNAP benefits.
The sad fact is that giving welfare parents a cash equivalent for purchasing food along with the actual cash is that parents on welfare are almost always parents who have made poor choices. They continue to do so at the grocery store.
Don't believe it? Mention banning purchases of junk food with SNAP and watch the screaming from supporters of SNAP programs and opponents of cuts.
School lunches and breakfasts are a great idea in the context of mandatory public school If it were up to me, they would provide a late afternoon meal as well. I would get the money for that by cutting SNAP and restricting their use to healthy foods, much as WIC is restricted.
Of course, that depends on the meals being palatable for the children. Michelle Meals were a flop as I personally witnessed merely by standing next to trash cans in school cafeterias. Give healthy and tasty foods to every child and watch their health and school performance improve strongly.
