Personally I think he was smart enough to see but didn't have the morality or the resources to object.
For sanity reasons a lot of them gameify their life and drink their own koolaid... Believe your own lie and you are not lying any more.. You will be a better warrior, absent of reflective thought, pure loyalty to the tribe.
