It’s a remarkable turn of events because the Contra Costa district attorney’s office had previously charged them with murder with a hate-crime enhancement.

Sims, a beloved local musician, was black. A sheriff’s sergeant discovered Sims with his face battered and bloodied. He also had a gunshot wound in his forehead.

Thats really awful, but it could have been much worse.

They were carjacked and both raped by the men and the men also raped them with objects. They cut the boyfriends dick off and then lit him on fire. She had to watch, then she was raped repeatedly and tortured, then they forced her to drink bleach in an effort to destroy all the semen evidence in her stomach. Much later after that she suffocated to death inside a plastic bag.

Brewer and two other white men kidnapped the 49-year-old black man on the night of June 7, 1998. They chained him by the ankles to the back of a pickup truck and dragged him for 3 ½ miles down a country road near Jasper, Texas. Byrd died when he was decapitated after he hit a culvert.
