Port workers strike starts across the East and Gulf Coasts
Updated 1:29 AM EDT, Tue October 1, 2024
Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) are on strike Tuesday against the nation’s East and Gulf Coast ports, according to the union, choking off the flow of many of the nation’s imports and exports in what could become America’s most disruptive work stoppage in decades.
The strike, which was also confirmed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the Port of Virginia, began at midnight. There appears to be a wide gap between the union’s demands and the offer of the United States Maritime Alliance, which uses the acronym USMX. The maritime alliance represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; as well as terminal operators and port authorities.

Yes, and since then union membership went from 35% of our workforce to 5%. No one looking out for the workers. But unions are coming back and Trump/Musk would just fire them, even though that's illegal, now.Ronald Reagan fired the Air Traffic Controllers when they went on strike.
Just like Reagan got the hostages out right after the election.Trump has a "long standing relationship" with a lot of people.
That's why he will be able to get the docks back under control if he can win the election.

Not really. San Francisco Bay used to get over 200 ships per day. They are lucky to see 50 ships in a month now.Plenty still comes into US ports all down the coast, unfortunately usually on foreign hulls to yards run by foreign shippers.
Indeed, and there was no strike. Thank you for pointing out the vast differences in leadership.

The same is true up and down the coast. The exception being Long Beach.
San Francisco can handle anything. One of the few ports in the world that can make that claim. To be fair, the ships did get much bigger, and containerization made storage more efficient.
