Bowe Bergdahl: Considering the Evidence before us

your point?

must be nice to be able to be critical of anyone in uniform while hiding in your basement.....i dont know what happened with this young man ...i do know at one time he was willing to step up and defend his country....more action than you have taken....btw...and then something went terribly wrong....

i do not expect to hear the truth from the government...we never have why expect it now...

pat tillman

You don't know that at one time he was willing to step up and defend his country at all. You don't know whether he joined the military for the purpose of getting into Afghanistan and collaborating with the Taliban.

According to Bergdahl's writings and emails, he wasn't expecting to defend his country. He was expecting to help the Afghan people as if the military was a UN humanitarian force.

What is this nonsense? Is the radical left so ignorant that they think it's not evidence until it is presented in a trial? It's freaking evidence no matter what and here's the little secret lefties: it's OK to be judgmental when the evidence is overwhelming.

@whitehall

I resent the fact you referred to me as a "radical leftist" just now. Given my respect for the judicial process, and my belief Bergdahl (the traitor that he is) even deserves a trial where the evidence is tried and tested before a judge and jury. Quite ironic though, people were upset when Anwar Al Awlaki was droned to death, as an American citizen, without his right to a trial. Be happy Bergdahl will get more than he did.

Awalaki didn't have a right to a trial.

Yes he did. He had 14th Amendment rights. What makes you think he didn't? You think you can simply selectively apply the constitution when it suits you? It's good to know that you would drone other American citizens without giving their right to a trial of their peers, Carbine. After all this bluster about these terrorists deserving trials, the very one that should have had one, didn't.

The "evidence before us" is completely circumstantial. It is hearsay, opionion, and speculation being repeated over and over in an echo chamber. There are some people who believe if you repeat something enough times, it becomes the truth. There are people who think that if enough people believe something, it becomes the truth.

If mass quantities of rubes can't tell the difference between these things and the TRUTH and FACTS, I fear for this nation. I really do.

Right, I'm going to read through a 183 post thread where it won't have what I asked for anyway.

The link will take you to a specific post, you lazy ****.

No it doesn't. You click the post # and then link to that page for a specific post.

Yes it does. That is a permalink, you buffoon. Permalinks point you to a specific area of a page. That is one of Unkotare's posts.

This is what that link leads to (damn, you're lazier than I am):

If he were suffering some form of aphasia it would be a medical issue and we would have heard reports of it in that context by now.

It seems far more likely that he would have been used as a source to train terrorists in rudimentary English than that he would have been beaten for a 'skill' of value to his supposed captors.
more likely, perhaps, but it is something that we don't know. there are lots of things about this that we don't know. And while I do defer to your knowledge on the subject is there no room for at least the possibility that he's having language difficulty? i mean have you ever seen that video of him from 2010 saying "get me to go... release... just get me to be release"

Considering his history of odd behavior even before enlisting, the whole episode - including his consequent five year Afghan 'home-stay' may ultimately be the result of schizophrenia that has gotten worse over time. It would explain disorganized speech that could be misinterpreted as 'having trouble speaking English,' irrational behavior like walking off unarmed, and inappropriate emotional expressions like his denunciations of America and his fellow soldiers. In other words, he may just be cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Ah yes, even you don't take a Pentagon investigation as fact. The. Pentagon. You are intellectually dishonest. If mass quantities of your own brain cells can't discern between talking points and an actual conclusion reached on an actual investigation, I fear for you personally.

AHEM! Attention everyone! AHEM!

We, being fair-minded Americans, must not judge this man before he has had his day in court. Let's be clear!

AHEM!

Now....having said that....allow me to list every possible rumor and bit of hearsay that I can find on the internets so as to establish his guilt for all to see!!

Alas....and.....er..... To Wit!

So you stand with me against the killing of Americans ANYWHERE without IMMEDIATE threat and without due process?

Say yes brother, let us stand against such usurping of the law.

Oh yeah! That is EXACTLY what I said! You are a ******* genius!

He joined forces with the enemy, an enemy that Congress had given the President the authorization to use force against. You can't use your citizenship as a bulletproof vest once you've joined the enemy. Are you ******* insane?

Alright, lets get some things straight here. Until the evidence is tried in a military court, and Bergdahl is tried in a military court; neither the evidence or what his fellow platoon mates say will mean much of anything. However, if we wanted to consider the evidence and the testimony of his fellow platoon mates, or his actions leading up to his alleged desertion, we need to focus on two things, his capture, and release:

June 27, 2009: Bergdahl sends a final e-mail to his parents, indicating that he was "ashamed to be an American."

June 30, 2009: Bergdahl is captured by Taliban insurgents after allegedly lagging behind in a patrol.

A few days later, according to Former Army Sgt. Evan Buetow, on the night and day of his capture, Bergdahl crawled away from the base, seeking talks with the Taliban. His (Buetow's) unit intercepted radio chatter indicating that he wished to do so. Bergdahl allegedly leaves a note behind that night indicating he wished to 'lead a new life.' Two days ago Nathan Bradley Bethea, a member of Bergdahl's battalion wrote an article in the Daily Beast that there had been no patrol on the night of his capture. A Pentagon investigation of Bergdahl's capture in 2010 reveals that he walked away from his unit. The US Military chooses not to exert any effort in pursuit.

We Lost Soldiers in the Hunt for Bergdahl, a Guy Who Walked Off in the Dead of Night - The Daily Beast

U.S. concluded in 2010 that Bergdahl walked away

On May 31, 2014, after negotiations with the Taliban, Bergdahl is released in exchange for five high profile Taliban combatants. From then on, a firestorm begins to brew over how the Obama Administration procured his release. That afternoon, Obama holds a surprise press conference in the Rose Garden. Attending is Bowe's father, Robert and his mother. Most notably here is Robert, who has noticeably grown a long beard. In his statements he is heard speaking in the Pashto language. Three days earlier, he releases a tweet he later deletes:

Speculation now swirls that Robert is an Islamic sympathizer, further raising suspicions that Bowe not only deserted his unit, but may have been collaborating with the Taliban. According to Fox News, a source familiar with the DoD confirmed that there is a considerable file on Bergdahl, and that there had been mounting concerns that Bergdahl may committed treason.

Given what we know now, Bergdahl can be tried for desertion. The Pentagon has already investigated and concluded that he committed a violation of Article 85 of the UCMJ. Now, Obama is facing a bipartisan firestorm for allegedly breaking the law to release the 5 men in exchange for Bergdahl and this has all the makings of a scandal. But I must contend, this evidence is nothing but speculative until tried and tested in a court of law. I ask you to consider these facts before jumping to any conclusions, as I have so often been told over the past couple of days.

(Note to the Moderators: if this is deemed a similar thread to the other two, please feel free to merge them. Thank you.)

I don't believe we have to focus on anything. If he committed a crime, then he should be tried when he gets back. But that changes nothing. We don't leave our people behind. You say people in your family are vets, well I am a vet and I can tell you (and I repeat to get this across) WE DON'T LEAVE OUR PEOPLE BEHIND. If that meant we had to hand over some people from GITMO to do it, then I am cool with that. If some people in Congress are upset, I am cool with that. But getting the guy back was the right thing to do because, just in case anyone didn't get it before, we don't leave our people behind.

As to what happens to him now, that is up to a military court.

Newsflash, genius, Bergdahl left his people behind. Honestly he should have suffered the same fate.

I don't give a damn what he did. I don't give a damn what you think. Just because you lack a sense of honor does not mean that I must as well. "Well, he did it first!" is a child's argument.

So when I asked who besides him supported the idea that Bergdahl might have had a mental breakdown,

he linked me to where HE says that? lol, I already knew he said it. That was the POINT of my asking who ELSE said it.

btw, where's your acknowledgement that Bergdahl might have had a mental breakdown?

He had a mental breakdown? Looks like he was pretty sane the moment he decided to betray his countrymen.

Enough of the excuses, Carbine.

Stop asking for something you are too ******* lazy to look at.

You linked me to the part of the page where you say he might be crazy. I already knew that.

Ask Kormac. He is certain there is no chance Bergdahl suffered a mental breakdown. Argue with him.

"I don't give a damn what he did."

Well of course not. No liberal does.

"I don't give a damn what you think."

Spoken with pure ignorance of the facts.

"Just because you lack a sense of honor does not mean that I must as well."

I have honor, honor enough to know you don't abandon your unit in the dead of night to "seek a new life."

And yes, he did do it first. He left his own unit behind. Betrayed the very same motto you folks bandy about so frequently. So, why, based on the facts and evidence, do I need to extol this man in any way? Why, based on the facts and evidence, should I deem Bergdahl a "man of honor"?

Your argumentum ad hominem is noted.
