We already have safe nuclear power,
We are not going to cut our dependcy on oil by 70% in 10 ******* years. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!
Too much of our infrastructure requires oil and it would take much longer then 10 years to get it oil free.
You want to cut our dependeny on foriegn oil by a significant amount....
Invest in Green Technology
Solar- Solar needs a major revamp, it is not ready to be a viable means of power, solar panel main problem is they only abosrb 10-15% of the sun's rays, there are new technologies on the way to make it jump up to 60-70%, then we are talking a real viable option. It uses nanotechnology. THis is still some years away.
Wind- Wind Power is expensive and inefficent, ie- if it isn't windy. However it is productive. However, if you wanted to replace all the nuclearpower plants we have and produce the same amount of electric using wind, you would need an area the size of Virgnia.
We are investing in clean coal, brand new coal plants are built passing the vigeorus requirements by our government, and the tech is getting better. We can never eliminate coal, we have to much of it.
Nuclear- We already have safe Nculear power! The only incidents we ever had were from 20+ years ago and there was not one fatility. We have safeguards in place to stop full meltdowns.
Exelon Progressing Toward 3,000 MW of Emission-Free Nuclear Power in Texas : CleanTechnica
Exelon, the largest operator of nuclear power plants in the United States has filed a license application with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US-NRC) to build two new nuclear power plants near Victoria, Texas. When operating, the plants will produce zero units of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury, sulfur oxides, and fly ash.
Exelon has chosen the Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) marketed by GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy. Each of the reactors will produce approximately 1,500 MW of electric power.
A first order approximation for the annual revenue potential for a 3,000 MWe plant in Texas would therefore be 23,000,000 x $72 = $1.6 Billion. If the new reactors are able to operate at the current fleet average O&M cost of $17.60 per MW-hour, that would leave $1.2 billion per year available for loan repayment and corporate profit. Predicting prices and costs 8-10 years into the future is a job for soothsayers.
Nuclear is clean and safe.
Also to get off oil as well
Drill, offshore and shale, we ahve th emost oil in the world. In 7 years we can have full access to our reserves and start pumping an dthen cut our imports by as much as 50%. We use our own oil till we have perfected our green renewable energy and the time it takes to transition to it.
Thats how we do it
