Uh oh, someone's trying to put a twist on Rousseau's Discourses whereas he stated ""Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains" (Which is another foundation of modern Marxism). Indeed it was Karl Marx who said that "religion is the opiate of the masses" and it was the USSR that funded "liberation theology" in South America as a means to "give them opium," or as Nikita Khrushchev put it Religion is the opiate of the people, so let's give them opium.

The full quote of Marx, in context is thus:
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people".
You and others equate Marxism with totalitarianism/despotism which suggests a limited understanding of history (to be nice). Simply because one has empathy for those in poverty does not make them a supporter of the form of government which exists in Russia or China, et al 'communist' states.
This entire
RED SCARE neo McCarthyism is at best disingenuous and divisive and prevents any intelligent dialogue directed toward reform in our country. Notice how many consider the PPACA "socialism" and yet support a neo fascism plutocracy, which seems to describe the prevalent description of political economy in our nation today.
