I think you are a bit confused about the 1980's.

Ronald Reagan actually continued Carter's tight money policies to fight inflation, which is why the unemployment rate spiked at 11.3% in 1983.

The only reason why unemployment was all of 0.2% lower in November 1984 than it was in November 1980 was because Reagan spent a lot of money we didn't have on the military, and jiggled the numbers to include active duty military in the job numbers, which wasn't done previously.

Middle Income Americans did pretty shitty under Reagan. Wages froze, union membership decline and the middle class shrank.
