We're already doing that with drones.

They have been doing combat where the objective is to clip a ribbon trailing from the planes

but I mean actual to the death combat

I was stationed on CV-63 U.S.S. Kitty Hawk back in the 70s.....and I watched hours upon hours of flight operations from the superstructure and on closed-circuit television below decks.

Saw alot of rough landings...but no wrecks. Had one plane go in the water on launch though.
