The F-35 was supposed to be a big upgrade to the F-16. After 20 years of modifications, it's still not worth a shit.

You are basing your opinion on old info. The flyoff that was done was not to see which was better. The F-35A that was used was a demo model. The second one off the line and to be used to test new systems. Let's look at a couple of comparisons

1. G rating. F-16C +9G. That particular F-35A reduced to 6Gs. The operational F-35A has a 9+G rating.

2. Top speed, F-16C with drop tanks limited to Mach 1.6. That particular F-35A was limited to subsonic speed only. They reduced the power of the F-35 to prevent damage. The real top speed of the F-35A is Mach `1.6.

But when they fly against each other in Red Flag, the F-35A has yet to be defeated by anything short of the F-22. 20-1 kill rate. The Marines fly in their own competitions and their F-35B has a 24-0 rate. The Test bird has almost zero in comparison to the operation birds.
