well, the problem is ... Taiwan really is part of China, and so is Hong Kong. China was a distinct national entity before Rome. Whatever people were on Taiwan before Chinese fisherman settled there where ... ethnically chinses since Taiwan was physically connected to the mainland at some time.

There is no factual anaology. Ukraine was defeated and treated as a vassal territory. The Kiev Rus empire developed from a Norse influx, and it predated the creation of "Russia" by hundreds of years. The Tsars conquered Ukraine and treated it as a vassal state, and that continued ... on and off ... until the 1990s.

Taiwan was created by political differences post WWII. Ukraine existed before Russia. Putin's claim to being ethnically tied to Ukraine is true only to the extent that one ethnic group of Rus decided to subjucate another, but the Rus actually have a claim to pretty much all of Europe if one accept's Putin's "logic."

China leased Hong Kong to the brits while under a gun. Taiwan "split" from China in a civil war.

Eastern Europe was united to some extent under a monarcy with it's place of power in Kiev hundreds of years before a russian state existed. Ethnically both Ukrainians and Russians share some ancestry, but the Rus actually derived from the Norse (vikings.)
