Ben Franklin's misunderstood quote.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

The common misconception is it has to do with sacrificing some freedoms for being protected from harm.

SIEGEL: What's the exact quotation?

WITTES: The exact quotation, which is from a letter that Franklin is believed to have written on behalf of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, reads, those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

SIEGEL: And what was the context of this remark?

WITTES: He was writing about a tax dispute between the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the family of the Penns, the proprietary family of the Pennsylvania colony who ruled it from afar. And the legislature was trying to tax the Penn family lands to pay for frontier defense during the French and Indian War. And the Penn family kept instructing the governor to veto. Franklin felt that this was a great affront to the ability of the legislature to govern. And so he actually meant purchase a little temporary safety very literally. The Penn family was trying to give a lump sum of money in exchange for the General Assembly's acknowledging that it did not have the authority to tax it.

Put in contemporary context, the misconception could be interpreted to mean people who would give their government the right to deny habeas corpus in order to have accused (BUT NOT CONVICTED) men illegally deported to a foreign gulag deserve neither the right to habeas or temporary safety.

My 9th Grade English teacher taught us the concept of Universal Truths using Shakespeare's Play "Julius Caesar" Numerous lines express timeless truths regardless of the context in which they are expressed in the play. Those with the ears to hear, eyes to see pick up on those truths in other literature as well. Movies often offer them in memorable lines we use for various other occasions.

Ben Franklin's quote here, as were almost all his most famous quotes, was given in a specific context at the time.

But that makes the quote no less true in many other contexts. A universal truth:
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." True in many cases regardless of the original context.

It's funny (sad) how MAGA has all of a sudden decided to trust the government no matter what it does.
Depends on who's running it. If the government is trying to save money and make money like Trump is, I'm all in. If they're stealing it for their own power like leftwingers do, then no.

This is coming straight from the mouth of USMB's biggest Republican OP, so it's gospel!
marc how many people here are you a spokes person for?......hey marc how come in the threads were i am going up against the righties here like the pot threads the threads about people having ins, the threads about unions...just last week the threads about people being fired ...i notice the biggest liberal in the usmb is never in those threads giving me a hand?...how come you avoid those threads marc?...i just want to see if what they say about you is true....

Don't try to slink back now, be an out and proud Republican like you want to be.

It's okay.

Our debt is about to increase as is the budget. So...........................as I said.

LOL. It's funny how marxists tried to desperately rewrite history a few years ago.

Read the letter. Franklin says that the government has done everything in it's power and within the limits of freedom to help the "poor distressed inhabitants," but they are declining such help. Franklin is saying that government has no right to intervene for people when those same people don't want intervention.

In other words, we're doing it for your own good is not an argument, paradigm or reason to nix freedom.

Nice try at revision, but the pertinent quote is below:

"...we have the most sensible Concern for the poor distressed Inhabitants of the Frontiers. We have taken every Step in our Power, consistent with the just Rights of the Freemen of Pennsylvania, for their Relief, and we have Reason to believe, that in the Midst of their Distresses they themselves do not wish us to go farther. Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.9"

btw, If anyone did not notice, Berg the OP reposted a story from 10 years ago.

Well, it's a quote I first heard .... 50 years ago, and I'm not nearly as old as Franklin.

Nevertheless, I don't buy his assertion that we are doing away with Habeas. Rather, imo, wannabe immigrants who don't actually qualify come here, and use Habeas as hammer to prevent being deported, which is what should happen to them.
