In the aftermath of Charlottesville, an awful lot of awful things have been said about Republicans and race relations.

However, the Left's accusations of racism couldn't be further from the truth that has played out in the halls of Congress over the last 150 years.

It is shocking that as talk of statues and historical racism is being bandied about, no one has mentioned the Democrats' utterly shameful treatment of African Americans throughout history.

Over the last 100 years, Republicans have stood up for African Americans while Democrats not only stood on the sidelines, but in fact served as obstructionists to civil liberties.

Here are at least 12 examples in which Democrats voted against African Americans, and Republicans voted to free them:

Democrats voted against every piece of civil rights legislation in Congress from 1866 to 1966 – a whopping 100 years. That is a dismal record for today's Democrats who would like you to believe that history has been on their side on this issue.

It hasn't.

Democrats voted to keep Africans Americans in slavery, opposing the 13th Amendmentwhich officially freed the slaves. Only four Democrats voted for it.

Republicans also passed the 14th Amendment which granted slaves U.S. citizenship; Democrats voted against it.

Republicans also passed the 15th Amendment which gave slaves the right to vote. Not a single one of the 56 Democrats in Congress voted for it.

Shame on them.

Furthermore, Republicans passed all of the Civil Rights laws of the 1860s — including the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the Reconstruction Act of 1867 following the Civil War.

The Republican Party itself was founded as the "anti-slavery party" in 1854. The party subsequently gave us President Abraham Lincoln and ultimately, the Emancipation Proclamation which led to the liberation of slaves.

Republicans supported African Americans not only in the 1800s, but in modern times as well.

Democrats and Republicans Switched Platforms - Fact or Myth?

A tiger can't change its stripes.
Well, then, one must infer that political parties are not tigers, for the reality is that the two parties have certainly altered their "stripes" as goes racist policies and their forbearance of racists.

In the conclusion of "Construction of the Racist Republican," one finds an excellent historical summary of the modern relationship of racists with the Democratic and Republican parties. In the statement of purpose section of the document, the author notes that two researchers. (The paper contains vast amounts of other useful information.) Reading that summation, one observes that there's no question that the political home of racists was the Democratic party.

Roemer and Lee document the "white flight" from the Democratic party to the GOP and show that four significant orthogonal ideological factors -- racism, libertarianism [1], feminism, and compassion for the poor -- tested against ten variables, drive voter preferences between the two parties being most significant among them. In addition to reporting the findings of other researchers like Carmines and Stimson, who found that the emergence of racial desegregation as a partisan issue during the 1960s led to a gradual but profound transformation of the US party system, and Lipset, who in American Exceptionalism: A Double-edged Sword, Lipset reports that racial issues were a primary source of anti-Democrat anger among white blue-collar voters, they also regress National Election Studies data. Their quantitative analysis revealed that "the defection of Democrats was largely due to their dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s racial liberalism."

Roemer and Lee's findings corroborate those of other researchers [some are mentioned above, others can be found in the bibliographies of the papers cited in this post] who've either reported on or documented the departure of "dyed in the wool" racists from the Democratic party -- there is no question that's where the majority of them used to be -- to the Republican party. That transformation should come as no surprise. Barrack Obama's becoming the Democratic party's nominee and leader could not have made more clear to racists that the Democratic party simply is no longer willing to pander to their bigotry.

Note:
  1. The "libertarianism" factor is interesting in that it captures the economic, foreign policy, and other "non-social justice" traits that motivate voter's party affiliation decisions. What was interesting about it is that even though it was tested for, it essentially disappears and plays no material role. For instance, looking at libertarians and racists feelings about government spending, "both libertarians and racists are against increasing the spending, but [as a determinant of party preference,] libertarianism is not significant statistically." Also, they found that "although libertarians strongly believe that the government wastes tax money, this belief is not strongly correlated with racism."

"Racism-free libertarians are consistent in opposing any kind of government spending (except environmental), although the [correlations are] insignificant in many cases. Racists, on the other hand, exhibit different attitudes to different spending programs. It appears that racism negatively affects preference for government spending mainly when the spending program is perceived to target minorities."

Before Charlottesville, Democrats voted for racist policies for more than 100 yearsyears

Then in 1964- 53 years ago- the Republican nominated for President one of the few non-Southern Senators to vote against the 1964 Civil Rights Act- passed by Democrats with Republican support.

The GOP went onto nominate two more Presidential candidates who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act:
Ronald Reagan and George Bush

And Martin Luther King Jr. correctly pointed out:

The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The “best man” at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade.

Senator Goldwater had neither the concern nor the comprehension necessary to grapple with this problem of poverty in the fashion that the historical moment dictated. On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represented a philosophy that was morally indefensible and socially suicidal. While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulated a philosophy which gave aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand. In the light of these facts and because of my love for America, I had no alternative but to urge every Negro and white person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that did not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy.

And syriously knows that Martin Luther King made a deal with a racist devil.....he betrayed his values for a lie, that johnson could be trusted...and his fellow Black Americans have paid in the blood of their children for the deal he made....

Lyndon Johnson opposed every civil rights proposal considered in his first 20 years as lawmaker

"He had been a congressman, beginning in 1937, for eleven years, and for eleven years he had voted against every civil rights bill –

against not only legislation aimed at ending the poll tax and segregation in the armed services but even against legislation aimed at ending lynching: a one hundred percent record," Caro wrote.

"Running for the Senate in 1948, he had assailed President" Harry "Truman’s entire civil rights program (‘an effort to set up a police state’)…Until 1957, in the Senate, as in the House, his record – by that time a twenty-year record – against civil rights had been consistent," Caro wrote.

The Party of Civil Rights

The depth of Johnson’s prior opposition to civil-rights reform must be digested in some detail to be properly appreciated.

In the House, he did not represent a particularly segregationist constituency (it “made up for being less intensely segregationist than the rest of the South by being more intensely anti-Communist,” as the New York Times put it), but Johnson was practically antebellum in his views.

Never mind civil rights or voting rights: In Congress, Johnson had consistently and repeatedly voted against legislation to protect black Americans from lynching.

As a leader in the Senate, Johnson did his best to cripple the Civil Rights Act of 1957; not having votes sufficient to stop it, he managed to reduce it to an act of mere symbolism by excising the enforcement provisions before sending it to the desk of President Eisenhower.

Johnson’s Democratic colleague Strom Thurmond nonetheless went to the trouble of staging the longest filibuster in history up to that point, speaking for 24 hours in a futile attempt to block the bill. The reformers came back in 1960 with an act to remedy the deficiencies of the 1957 act, and Johnson’s Senate Democrats again staged a record-setting filibuster.

In both cases, the “master of the Senate” petitioned the northeastern Kennedy liberals to credit him for having seen to the law’s passage while at the same time boasting to southern Democrats that he had taken the teeth out of the legislation.

Johnson would later explain his thinking thus: “These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days, and that’s a problem for us, since they’ve got something now they never had before: the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this — we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference.”

Goldwater.....

Barry M. Goldwater: The Most Consequential Loser in American Politics

Goldwater treated all people the same. As a private citizen, he flew mercy missions to Navaho reservations, never asking for recognition or accepting payment. He felt that “the red man seemed as much—if not more—a part of Arizona and America as any white or black person.”[20] Moreover, a few weeks after Goldwater was discharged from the Army in November 1945, Democratic Arizona Governor Sidney Preston Osborn asked him to organize the Arizona Air National Guard. One of Goldwater’s first recommendations, soon approved, was to desegregate the unit. Goldwater’s integration of the state’s Air National Guard took place more than two years before President Harry Truman integrated the U.S. armed forces.
Goldwater was an early member of the Arizona chapters of both the NAACP and the National Urban League, even making up the latter’s operating deficit when it was getting started. Later as a Senator, he desegregated the Senate cafeteria in 1953, demanding that his black legislative assistant, Kathrine Maxwell, be served along with every other Senate employee after learning she had been denied service.
In the mid-1970s, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, investigating improper operations of the intelligence community in the United States, proposed that transcripts of the FBI tapes about Martin Luther King Jr.’s alleged indiscretions be published. An outraged Goldwater declared he would not be a party to destroying King’s reputation and strode out of the committee room. A fellow Senator recalled that Goldwater’s protest “injected some common sense into the proceedings,” and the electronic surveillance transcripts were not released.[21]

That his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was based on constitutional grounds and not political considerations was underscored in the final week of the fall campaign.
Speaking in Columbia, South Carolina, Goldwater condemned segregation and declared that government must treat “all men as equal in the arena of law and civil order.”[22] He pledged if elected President to implement all provisions of the act. His forthright pro-civil rights speech was televised on 87 stations throughout the South.

NPR Wrong on Goldwater '64, Civil Rights, Say 4 Who Were There
As for the Republican nominee's position on the Civil Rights Act, Goldwater had said he would vote for passage if Section II on public accommodations and Section VII on equal employment opportunity were removed. With his view reinforced by a detailed memorandum from Phoenix lawyer and future Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Goldwater felt these sections were unconstitutional, were unenforceable without a federal police force, and would lead to the creation of racial quotas and affirmative action.

"He was absolutely right about [the two sections of the Civil Rights Act] and they did lead to precisely what Goldwater and most conservatives were afraid of," said Tom Winter, then executive editor of Human Events, who would join Ryskind as its co-owner a year later. As for the "extremism in the defense of liberty" speech, Winter recalled watching it from a San Francisco restaurant "and cheering it because it was clearly about freedom and fighting communism. I certainly didn't think it had anything to do with race."
Urban Legend: Goldwater Against Civil Rights

More specifically, Goldwater had problems with title II and title VII of the 1964 bill. He felt that constitutionally the federal government had no legal right to interfere in who people hired, fired; or to whom they sold their products, goods and services. He felt that “power” laid in the various states, and with the people. He was a strong advocate of the tenth amendment. Goldwater’s constitutional stance did not mean he agreed with the segregation and racial discrimination practiced in the South. To the contrary, he fought against these kinds of racial divides in his own state of Arizona. He supported the integration of the Arizona National guard and Phoenix public schools.[4] Goldwater was, also, a member of the NAACP and the Urban League.[5]

His personal feelings about discrimination are enshrined in the congressional record where he states, “I am unalterably opposed to discrimination or segregation on the basis of race, color, or creed or on any other basis; not only my words, but more importantly my actions through years have repeatedly demonstrated the sincerity of my feeling in this regard…”[6]. And, he would continued to holdfast to his strongly felt convictions that constitutionally the federal government was limited in what it could do, believing that the amoral actions of those perpetuating discrimination and segregation would have to be judged by those in that community. Eventually, the states government and local communities would come to pressure people to change their minds. Goldwater’s view was that the civil disobedience by private citizens against those business establishments was more preferable than intervention by the feds. He, optimistically, believed that racial intolerance would soon buckle under the economic and societal pressure.

That article annoys me. They have completely caved to the left's narrative.

I like how republicans like to ignore the last 40 years. Republicans and democrats have significantly switched agendas. Republicans use to be the progressive party and democrats were conservatives.

If republicans were the same party they were 100 years, they would be supporting progressive policies . But they're not. Republicans have become very conservative and their policies are not only conservative, but they are antiquated.

Dude the only thing that has 'swapped' is that the Democrats have gone from promoting pro-white policies to promoting pro-minority policies.

They are still THE race baiting party of American politics.

We can always count on 2aguy to attack African Americans as part of his attacks on Democrats. We can always count on 2aguy to attack the most important leader for Civil Rights in the 20th century- Martin Luther King Jr.

Lyndon Johnston was every bit as much of a racist as Abraham Lincoln.

And as 2aguy knows but keeps trying to pretend otherwise- just as Lincoln was reponsible for the most important Civil Rights accomplishment of the 19th century- Johnson was responsible for the most important Civil Rights Bill of the 20th century.

Meanwhile- Goldwater- non-racist as he probably was- voted against the most important Civil Rights bill of the 20th Century.

The GOP was so upset by Goldwater's vote that they nominated him for President.

And then nominated two more candidates who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Bill- Reagan and Bush.

Which is why Martin Luther King Jr's words are as true and as prophetic today as they were then

The Democratic Party was responsible for passing Jim Crow laws, in addition to Black Civil Codes that forced Americans to utilize separate drinking fountains, swimming pools, and other facilities in the 20th century. (Wikipedia Commons)

2aguy- once again telling African Americans that he believes that African Americans are stupid- and fools

Not surprising coming from a guy who labels Martin Luther King Jr. a race traitor, and President Obama a racist- but Donald Trump- the guy who refused to rent to African Americans of course- to 2aguy- Trump is not a racist.

(The paper contains vast amounts of other useful information.) That's your response to comments and content that explicitly remark upon and show empirically the shift of voters, actual human beings, of a given mindset from one party to the other. Seriously? Please tell me your comment is merely an attempt to bait me into a different line of discussion?

Every person who signed the Southern Manifesto was a Democrat. Every one of them remained a Democrat till the day that they died except for Strom Thurman.

You have not shown anything empirically other than a generic shift in white voters from D to R since 1960's. And there are many reasons for that, and a gazillion more since then.

The racist leadership in America in 1956 was Democrat and REMAINED DEMOCRAT.

The only group TODAY that once again champions the reduction of rights on the basis of race ONCE AGAIN ARE DEMOCRATS, they just changed who they are doing their race hustling for, and that is all.

No, moron...I did not call Martin Luther King a race traitor....I said he made a deal with a racist devil.....he thought he could trust a racist more than he could Goldwater, who was a man of principal.....Goldwater believed in limited government, the racist johnson knew he could use government to buy votes, so he did. And Martin Luther didn't understand the problem with parts of the 64 act.....he made a bad deal, and now blacks are suffering because of it.......it was a mistake, he went with the racist democrat rather than the decent man, Goldwater.

Obama sat in an openly and proudly racist church and called the openly and proudly racist pastor, jermeiah wright, a good friend, he had the racist friend marry him and Michelle and baptize their children....obama is a racist of the first order.

Trump is a business man first, and has no record of racism...after decades in public life......you can try to smear him with false allegations while defending the actual racists...that just shows you are the vile human being that you are.
